Frequently Asked Questions
Program Intent & Structure
Q: What is the Mozilla Pioneers program?
A: Mozilla Pioneers is a paid, hands-on, flexible residency program that invites creative technologists to build new products aligned with Mozilla’s mission. Applications open January 26, 2026 with selected participants working with Mozilla leaders to explore, prototype, and validate ideas that could become future Mozilla products.
Q: Why should I apply?
A: Pioneers is an opportunity to work deeply on a product idea you care about — with the backing, mentorship, and resources of Mozilla. Participants get the chance to collaborate with Mozilla’s New Products leadership, explore ideas aligned with Mozilla’s mission, and help shape products that could have real impact on how people experience the internet.
If you’re excited about building responsibly, value clear collaboration, and want to work on products designed to empower users, this program is a chance to do that work inside Mozilla.
Q: Who should apply?
A: The program is designed for product builders who are motivated to take ideas from early concept to real-world application. We’re particularly interested in individuals who enjoy hands-on building, independent execution, and collaborative problem-solving.
Due to the structure of this pilot program and the teams supporting it, applicants must be based in the United States. Pioneers is designed for close, hands-on collaboration with Mozilla mentors and product teams who are primarily North America–based, and this focus helps ensure effective coordination, shared working hours, and a strong experience for participants throughout the program.
Program participants must be aligned with Mozilla’s mission and values,. Additional guidance on the experience and characteristics we’re looking for is available in the application materials.
Q: What kinds of projects or ideas is Mozilla interested in exploring?
A: Mozilla is interested in exploring product ideas that align with our mission and current areas of focus, including trusted AI experiences, Firefox-adjacent products, open source AI tools for developers, agentic AI, the future of content and media, and the future of online and offline communities.
Please refer to the Current Areas of Interest section above for more detail on the types of ideas we’re most excited to explore through Mozilla Pioneers.
Builder Experience & Collaboration Model
Q: What does it mean to build “with Mozilla” during the program?
A: We are looking for people who want to shape and bring to life product concepts that they want Mozilla to launch. Participants will work with members of the New Products org to shape a product concept, though execution will be fairly independent. There will be weekly mentorship calls to provide feedback and help you and access to different functions within New Products to help answer questions and test concepts.
Q: How is this different from Mozilla Builders or other Mozilla grant programs?
A: Mozilla Builders and other grant programs typically invest in pre-existing ideas or programs that people want to build or expand for the benefit of the wider ecosystem. Pioneers is built as an opportunity to invite like-minded creative technologists to build new Mozilla products — from concept to completion — within Mozilla.
Mozilla Mission & Vision
Q: How does this program fit into Mozilla’s broader product strategy?
A: Mozilla New Products is focused on building the next generation of breakout products for Mozilla — and we know that meaningful innovation doesn’t happen in isolation. Pioneers is designed to bring mission aligned builders into close collaboration with Mozilla’s product leadership to explore and shape new product concepts that align with our strategy and product standards.
The program is intentionally centered on early-stage discovery and exploration. Participants work with Mozilla’s New Products team to develop ideas that reflect Mozilla’s product principles and long-term direction. Any concept that moves forward beyond the program would go through Mozilla’s standard product development and review processes before being built or released more broadly.
IP, Ownership & Outcomes
Q: Who owns the intellectual property created during the program?
A: All intellectual property created during the program will be owned by Mozilla. We were intentional to not ask for product concepts as part of the application process. Please don’t submit product ideas unless you’re okay with Mozilla having rights to the idea or concept.
Q: What happens to participants and their work after the program?
A: For strong product concepts that align well with the Mozilla New Products product strategy there will be an opportunity to transition to Mozilla in a full-time product management position to continue to build out the product.
Application Process
Q: How does the application process work?
A: From the website applicants can access the written application. In that application we will ask you to share more about past experiences, interest areas and references. Upon submission applications will be reviewed and a select number of individuals will be invited for an interview process. Based on the outcomes of the interviews 2-4 people will be invited to participate in Mozilla Pioneers.
Q: How will participants be determined and what is the judging criteria?
A: Applications will be reviewed by Mozilla’s New Products team and evaluated based on alignment with Mozilla’s current areas of interest, the applicant’s relevant experience, and their ability to work independently while collaborating closely with Mozilla teams.
We’re looking for experienced builders who demonstrate strong product judgment, curiosity, and a track record of turning early ideas into real-world products — not for fully formed concepts or pitches. The application process is designed to assess how applicants think, build, and collaborate, rather than to collect product ideas.
Q: What happens after I apply?
A: After applications close, submissions are reviewed by Mozilla’s New Products team to identify applicants whose experience and interests align with the program. Selected applicants will be contacted for next steps, which may include a conversation to better understand their background, working style, and goals.
All applicants will be notified of their status. Because of the volume of interest we expect, we may not be able to provide individualized feedback, but we aim to run a transparent and respectful process throughout.
Q: Is this a job program or path to employment at Mozilla?
A: Pioneers is not a job posting and participation does not guarantee employment at Mozilla. It is a paid, time-bound collaboration focused on early-stage product exploration with Mozilla’s New Products team.
In some cases, work from the program may inform future product development or longer-term collaboration, but any potential next steps — including employment opportunities — would be considered via Mozilla’s standard hiring processes.
